Hair Cutting & Autism

When my son, Christopher, was younger and the day finally arrived when I decided to cut his long curly locks, his first haircut(s) were nothing short of a nightmare. Be it sensory overload or fear of a new situation, the event brought anxiety to us all.

Initially, I made sure to take Chris to a place that was kid-friendly… Balloons, games, primary/bright/happy colors. I talked with him before he went, showed him videos and read books to him on hair cutting. Time and repetition eased his mind, and now he often asks to get a hair cut. His fear for hair cutting is no more!!
